What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Consultation
Your First Visit to The Wireworks: A Step-by-Step Guide
Thinking about getting braces or aligners? The first step is a consultation — and if you've never been to an orthodontist before, it's natural to wonder what the experience will be like.
At The Wireworks, we've been welcoming new patients for over 30 years. Whether you're considering treatment for yourself or your child, here's exactly what to expect at your first appointment.
Before Your Appointment
What to Bring
- Photo ID and your health card
- Dental insurance information (if applicable)
- Referral letter from your dentist (if you have one — it's not required)
- Recent dental X-rays (if available — we can take new ones if needed)
- A list of questions — write down anything you want to ask
If you'd like to save time, you can complete our new patient form online before your visit.
How Long Will It Take?
Plan for about 45-60 minutes for your first consultation. This gives us enough time to do a thorough evaluation without rushing.
What Happens During the Consultation
Step 1: Welcome and Medical History
Our team will greet you and review your medical and dental history. We'll ask about any concerns you have, previous dental work, and your goals for treatment. This is a judgment-free conversation — we're here to help, not to pressure you.
Step 2: Clinical Examination
Dr. Eggert Boehlau will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth, jaws, and bite. He'll look at:
- Tooth alignment and spacing
- Bite relationship (how your upper and lower teeth fit together)
- Jaw position and symmetry
- Gum and oral tissue health
- Facial profile and proportions
Step 3: Digital Imaging
If needed, we'll take digital X-rays and 3D scans of your teeth and jaw. At The Wireworks, we use advanced digital imaging technology — including our on-site Kinetica 3D digital lab — to get a precise picture of your orthodontic needs. The process is quick, painless, and gives Dr. Boehlau the detailed information needed to plan your treatment.
Step 4: Diagnosis and Discussion
This is the most important part. Dr. Boehlau will sit down with you and explain:
- What he found — a clear explanation of any issues with your teeth or bite
- Treatment options — the pros and cons of each approach (braces, clear aligners, combination therapy, etc.)
- Recommended approach — his professional recommendation based on your specific case
- Timeline — how long treatment is likely to take
- What happens if you wait — whether delaying treatment has any consequences
Dr. Boehlau encourages questions. The more you understand about your treatment, the better your experience will be.
Step 5: Cost and Payment Discussion
Our team will provide a clear breakdown of:
- Total treatment cost — a personalized quote based on your treatment plan
- Insurance coverage — we'll help you understand what your plan covers
- Payment options — flexible payment plans to fit your budget
- Tax benefits — orthodontic treatment qualifies for the Medical Expense Tax Credit in Ontario
There are no hidden fees. The quote you receive is comprehensive.
After Your Consultation
There is absolutely no obligation to start treatment. Take the information home, think it over, discuss with your family, and reach out when you're ready. Your consultation and all the information we provide is completely free.
If you do decide to proceed, our team will schedule your first treatment appointment and walk you through everything you need to know to prepare.
Common Questions About First Visits
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
No. While many patients are referred by their family dentist, you can book a consultation directly. No referral is needed.
Will I get braces at my first appointment?
No. The first visit is for evaluation and discussion only. If treatment is recommended, we'll schedule a separate appointment to begin.
Can I bring my child to my appointment (or vice versa)?
Of course! Families are welcome. If both a parent and child are interested in treatment, we can often evaluate both at the same visit.
Is the consultation really free?
Yes. Your initial consultation at The Wireworks is completely free with no obligation. We believe everyone deserves to understand their orthodontic options.
